Apparently, Samsung hasn’t given up the race for higher and higher megapixel numbers. The upcoming flagship Galaxy S23 is said to come with the highest-resolution camera in the series to date.
Samsung usually presents the new flagship smartphones of the S series in the spring. Allegedly included this time: A 200-megapixel sensor that comes directly from Samsung and is said to be called Isocell HP2. According to the reliable Twitter leaker “Ice Universe”, it will remain reserved for the supposed top model S23 Ultra.
Since smartphones do not have the largest sensors, pixel numbers are particularly relevant for what is known as pixel binning: Here, several pixels are added together to form one. This ensures that, despite the small pixels, which can actually absorb little light, significantly better images are created in poor lighting situations. Therefore, when buying a smartphone, pay attention to the sensor and pixel size.
The larger the sensor and the pixels (given in µm), the better the performance of the camera. Of course, exceptions confirm this rule, and good processing (i.e. the automatic digital processing of the photo) has become just as important as with Google, Apple, and Samsung.
The Samsung Galaxy S23 will probably not be the first smartphone with such a high-resolution sensor. Competitor Motorola has already made initial statements about the soon-to-be-released Moto X30 Pro: It also relies on a main camera with 200 megapixels. This is based on the Samsung Isocell HP1, which measures 1/1.22″ and is therefore one of the largest sensors ever. At least on paper, there should be good photos in it.
The alleged Isocell HP2 in the supposed Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra could then possibly be a sensor of the same size or even larger.
